Toddler Struck by Vehicle in Tragic Accident Near Cleveland, Texas

CLEVELAND, TX (June 8, 2025) — A tragic accident unfolded Sunday afternoon when a 2-year-old toddler was accidentally struck by a vehicle driven by a relative in a private driveway on the 300 block of County Road 3548, located in the Cleveland area of Liberty County.

The devastating incident occurred around mid-day, according to officials with the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office. The child’s parents, realizing the severity of the situation, immediately picked up their son and began driving toward the nearest hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life.

While en route, the family flagged down a Liberty County Sheriff’s Office patrol unit, operated by Corporal Rosas, who immediately responded. Upon assessing the child’s condition—including shallow breathing and signs of trauma—Cpl. Rosas radioed for backup and EMS.

Recognizing the urgency, Cpl. Rosas transferred the mother and injured child into a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) patrol unit, which transported them at high speed to HCA Cleveland Hospital.

Once at the hospital, emergency room staff initiated life-saving procedures and promptly requested a Life Flight helicopter to transfer the child to a trauma center. The toddler was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital in downtown Houston, where he was immediately rushed into surgery.

The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office has launched a full investigation into the incident to determine all contributing factors.

Captain David Meyers, spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office, offered heartfelt condolences, saying,

“Our hearts go out to the toddler and his family during this deeply tragic time. We are keeping them in our prayers.”

He went on to praise the rapid response by law enforcement:

“Cpl. Rosas and all the deputies involved acted with urgency and professionalism, doing everything possible to get this child the critical care he needed.”

No further details on the child’s current condition have been released as of Sunday evening. Authorities are continuing to investigate and will provide updates as they become available.
