Progress Report – First 150 Days in Office

In January 2025, I took command of a Sheriff’s Office facing serious challenges – critical staffing shortages and low morale across all divisions. Over the past 150 days, through strategic leadership, teamwork, and the invaluable support of our county, municipal, and state partners, we have made substantial progress in restoring operational readiness, accountability, and public confidence in the San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office (SJCSO).
1. Full Staffing Achieved Across All Divisions
At the time I assumed office, the SJCSO was operating with a skeleton crew. There were critical shortages in patrol, no criminal investigators, and a lack of corrections personnel and emergency dispatchers.
Today, I am proud to report that every division is now staffed. This milestone was achieved through accelerated recruiting efforts, proactive leadership engagement, and a streamlined onboarding process. With more deputies on the ground, we’ve significantly improved community coverage, response times, and officer safety.
2. Acquisition of Critical Equipment
Thanks to the outstanding leadership of Chief Deputy Jolly, we have secured vital operational and surplus equipment from partner law enforcement agencies – at no additional cost to county taxpayers.
These acquisitions include:
Patrol vehicle equipment
Safety and tactical gear
Radios and communications tools
Information technology upgrades
These resources have greatly enhanced our capabilities while preserving the county’s financial integrity.
3. Boosted Morale and Team Cohesion
Rebuilding pride within the department has been a top priority. Through open communication, recognition of hard work, and clear expectations, we’ve fostered a culture of mutual respect, professionalism, and mission-focused service.
Morale among our deputies, detention officers, and staff has seen a marked improvement. The men and women of SJCSO are once again proud to wear the badge and serve our community with honor.
Looking Ahead
While our first 150 days have laid a solid foundation, our mission is far from complete. We remain focused on:
Strengthening community trust
Enhancing training and accountability
Preparing to meet the evolving challenges of modern law enforcement
It is my great honor to serve the citizens of San Jacinto County. I look forward to continuing our progress in the months and years ahead.
Thank you,
Sheriff Sam Houston
