May 14, 2025 | Coldspring, TX — At its May 5 meeting, the Coldspring City Council unanimously denied a request from the San Jacinto County Emergency Services District (ESD) to transfer ownership of the Coldspring Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) building to the ESD.

Mayor John Benestante confirmed the council’s decision, stating that a formal letter was sent to the ESD outlining the city’s position. The council’s discussion centered on maintaining local control over the fire department’s facilities and operations.
The ESD’s request aimed to consolidate emergency services under its jurisdiction, potentially streamlining operations and funding. However, city officials expressed concerns about relinquishing control of a critical public safety asset.
The Coldspring VFD has long served the community, and the city council emphasized the importance of preserving its autonomy. Mayor Benestante noted that while the city values collaboration with the ESD, it must also consider the best interests of its residents.
The ESD has not yet responded publicly to the council’s decision. Further discussions between the city and the ESD may occur as both entities continue to evaluate the most effective ways to serve the community’s emergency service needs.
