Former TDCJ Officer Sentenced to 12 Years for Smuggling Meth into Prison

Amarillo, TX — A former Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) correctional officer has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after being caught attempting to smuggle contraband into a state facility.

Jonatan Grajeda Mojica was apprehended in July 2021 while trying to bring more than 200 grams of methamphetamine and multiple cellphones into the Clements Unit, a maximum-security prison located in Amarillo. Authorities say Mojica was acting with the intent to distribute the drugs within the prison.

Following a criminal investigation, Mojica was convicted and received two 12-year sentences for the charges. A third count was dismissed.

The case highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat the smuggling of drugs and other contraband into correctional institutions, which pose serious threats to prison security and public safety.

No further details about Mojica’s motives or potential co-conspirators have been released at this time.
