Austin, Texas — May 14, 2025
Two young boys — just 12 and 13 years old — are now facing capital murder charges after a 20-year-old man was shot and killed while attempting to recover his family’s stolen car in the Del Valle area of southeast Austin.
The victim, identified by authorities as Anthony Salas, was killed on May 3 after confronting the suspects who had reportedly stolen his vehicle. According to the Austin Police Department, Salas was shot during the encounter and then struck by the vehicle as the suspects fled the scene. He died from his injuries shortly after.

Investigators say the two boys were already linked to a string of vehicle burglaries in south and east Austin. Surveillance footage and witness accounts helped law enforcement track down the suspects, who were arrested days later and charged with capital murder by terroristic threat — a charge that carries serious implications even for juveniles under Texas law.
“This is heartbreaking on every level,” said an Austin Police Department spokesperson. “A young man lost his life, and now two children are facing the most serious charge in the justice system. There are no winners here — just tragedy.”
The killing has sent shockwaves through the community, raising alarm about youth involvement in violent crimes and the risks victims face when trying to recover stolen property on their own.
“I never thought something like this would happen here, especially involving kids,” said a neighbor who lives near the scene. “It’s just devastating.”
The Austin Police Department is urging residents to report vehicle thefts and suspicious activity to authorities and avoid personal attempts to recover stolen property without police assistance.
As of now, the 12- and 13-year-old suspects are being held in juvenile custody. Their names have not been released due to their ages. The case remains under active investigation.
