Unsolved 2008 Trinity Murder Remains Cold, Police Seek Public’s Help

March 31, 2025

Trinity, TX – The murder of La’Kendrick “Big Coony” Simmons remains unsolved more than 16 years after he was fatally shot inside a Trinity home. Authorities are once again asking for the public’s help in solving the case.

On December 11, 2008, Simmons, 19, was at his girlfriend’s residence when three masked individuals entered, demanding drugs and money. The intruders reportedly called out for “Brandon,” the brother of Simmons’ girlfriend. During the confrontation, Simmons stood up to defend himself and was shot in the chest, dying from his injuries.

At the time of the investigation, former Trinity Police Chief Steven Jones expressed frustration over the lack of cooperation from witnesses, stating, “There are people here that know exactly what happened.” Despite multiple appeals for information, the case has remained cold.

Now, Trinity Police Chief Steven Jeter is renewing efforts to find those responsible, assuring the community that Simmons and his family have not been forgotten. Authorities believe someone in the area may have crucial information that could finally bring justice to Simmons and closure to his loved ones.
