Texas Rangers Investigate Suicide Following Mental Health Call in Liberty

April 4, 2025

Liberty, TX – April 4, 2025 — The Texas Rangers have launched an investigation into the death of a 20-year-old pregnant woman who died by suicide during a mental health response involving Liberty Police on March 30, 2025.

According to a written statement released by the Liberty Police Department, officers were dispatched to a residence in response to a mental health crisis. During the encounter, the woman reportedly gained control of an officer’s firearm and fatally shot herself. Despite immediate life-saving efforts at the scene, she was pronounced dead.

Authorities have emphasized that the case does not qualify as an officer-involved shooting. “On March 30, 2025, the Liberty Police Department responded to a mental health call where the individual involved ultimately passed away after life-saving efforts,” the department’s statement reads. “While this incident is not an officer-involved shooting, we have requested the Texas Rangers to conduct an investigation due to the unusual circumstances surrounding the situation.”

The Texas Rangers routinely refer such cases to the District Attorney’s office for review and potential presentation to a grand jury to ensure a transparent and impartial investigation.

The woman, whose identity has not yet been released, was reportedly five months pregnant at the time of her death. Her tragic passing has sparked widespread concern in the community about the handling of mental health emergencies and the protocols in place to protect vulnerable individuals during police interactions.

No officers were injured in the incident. The Texas Municipal Police Association (TMPA) confirmed via a Facebook post that attorneys are representing the officers involved. “TMPA remains committed to supporting our members in the moments that matter most,” the organization stated.

As of now, the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities have not released further details, citing the sensitive nature of the case and respect for the family involved.
