Liberty County, TX — April 15, 2025 — The Liberty County Jail has been ordered to shut down by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards following a string of alarming incidents and persistent safety violations. The unprecedented move comes after a recent fire, a violent inmate riot earlier this year, and multiple failed inspections over the past two years.
Fire Sparks Urgent Action
Earlier this month, a fire broke out in one of the jail’s housing units, initially believed to be the result of inmate misconduct. However, an investigation revealed the blaze started due to a faulty light fixture igniting clutter that had accumulated inside the facility. The fire forced the emergency evacuation of more than 45 inmates and sent five correctional officers to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Fortunately, no inmate injuries were reported.
“This was a preventable incident,” said a representative from the state commission. “It reflects the ongoing failure to maintain basic safety protocols.”

The fire followed a February riot involving approximately 40 inmates, sparked during a routine contraband sweep. Liberty County has been given 15 days to relocate all inmates. Local officials are coordinating transfers to nearby counties and even facilities in Louisiana. Despite the shutdown, jail staff will remain employed during the transition to help with logistics and maintain order.
The county has retained legal counsel to appeal the decision and discuss possible corrective actions that could lead to the facility’s eventual reopening. County Judge Jay Knight confirmed that discussions are ongoing and that all options, including building a new facility, are on the table.
