NACOGDOCHES, Texas — A Lufkin man is in custody after allegedly plotting a murder that was narrowly averted thanks to a timely tip from a concerned individual.
Nacogdoches police arrested 44-year-old Jessie Dale Cashion on Sunday morning after receiving a call that he was planning to kill another individual. Officers quickly responded to a “possible in-progress murder plot” at a local law firm around 9:40 a.m., according to Nacogdoches Police Public Information Officer Brett Ayres.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers located Cashion in possession of a firearm. Authorities said the intended victim was scheduled to arrive shortly afterward. Preliminary findings suggest the two individuals had previous business dealings, though further details on their connection have not been released.
Cashion was immediately taken into custody and transported to the Nacogdoches County Jail. He faces a charge of murder, although officials clarified that the charge stems from a preparatory offense under Chapter 15 of the Texas Penal Code. Under this statute, attempting or preparing to commit a first-degree felony like murder constitutes a second-degree felony, depending on the circumstances.
No injuries were reported, and authorities confirmed the intended victim was unharmed.
“This could have turned out very differently if not for the individual who made that phone call,” said Ayres. “We’re thankful they spoke up before anything happened.”
As of Monday, Cashion remains held in the Nacogdoches County Jail. The investigation is ongoing, and more details are expected to be released in the coming days.
