Fire at Liberty County Jail Prompts Inmate Evacuation, Sends Two Officers to Hospital

LIBERTY, Texas — A fire broke out at the Liberty County Jail Monday night, April 7, prompting a rapid emergency response and leading to the evacuation of dozens of inmates. Two correctional officers were hospitalized with minor injuries sustained during the incident.

The blaze was reported around 9:20 p.m. at the west end of the jail facility. According to the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, correctional officers, deputies, and the Liberty Fire Department responded swiftly to the emergency. Approximately 50 to 60 inmates housed in the affected area were relocated to ensure their safety.

One officer was treated for smoke inhalation while another suffered light-headedness; both were transported to Liberty Dayton Emergency Room and are expected to recover.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control within about 40 minutes, but lingering smoke delayed the return of inmates to their housing units. Officials continued working overnight to ventilate the area and restore normal operations.

Investigators believe the fire was intentionally set by a male inmate, though the exact cause remains under review. Interviews with inmates and further investigation will follow once the facility is fully secured.

Captain David Meyers of the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office praised the fast response of the Liberty Fire Department, noting that their efforts prevented the situation from escalating. He added that there is no evidence the fire was part of a larger riot or coordinated disruption.

No inmates were injured, and damage appears to be contained to a limited section of the jail.

The case remains under active investigation. Further updates are expected as officials determine potential charges and assess the full extent of the damage.
