Houston Man Busted with Nearly 20 Pounds of Cocaine in Liberty County Traffic Stop

Cleveland, TX (May 9, 2025) — A routine traffic stop in Liberty County turned into a major drug bust Thursday after deputies discovered nearly 20 pounds of cocaine hidden in the trunk of a vehicle.

According to the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, deputies pulled over a white 2024 Volkswagen Jetta on U.S. Highway 59 in Cleveland for a traffic violation on May 8. The driver, identified as 51-year-old Byron Donsha Adams of Houston, reportedly refused to allow a search of the vehicle, prompting deputies to call in a K9 unit for assistance.

The K9 alerted to the presence of narcotics, giving officers probable cause to search the car. Inside the trunk, deputies found two cloth sacks containing approximately seven packages of cocaine, with a total weight of 19.36 pounds (8.80 kilograms).

Adams was arrested at the scene and transported to the Liberty County Jail, where he was booked on a charge of Manufacture/Delivery of a Controlled Substance PG1 over 400 grams, a first-degree felony under Texas law.

Officials have not released further details on whether the narcotics were linked to a larger distribution operation. The investigation is ongoing.

The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office praised the work of the K9 unit and deputies, highlighting the importance of interdiction efforts in curbing drug trafficking along major corridors like Highway 59.
