Cleveland, TX – May 4, 2025 — The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred early Sunday morning, leaving one man dead and another under questioning.
Deputies responded to a report of a shooting around 5:30 a.m. in the 900 block of FM 2025, near the local VFW lodge. According to Capt. David Meyers, a department spokesperson, a resident reported encountering an unknown man inside his truck. Believing the individual may have been armed—reportedly seeing a shiny object—the resident opened fire. The man fled the scene but collapsed a short distance away on FM 2025 and was later pronounced dead.
Investigators recovered several shell casings at the scene, indicating multiple shots were fired. The resident was transported to a nearby hospital following the incident. Officials did not clarify why he was hospitalized, but it is believed he did not sustain any injuries during the confrontation. Detectives are interviewing the resident as they work to piece together the sequence of events. Authorities have not released the names of either individual involved, and no arrests have been made.
